We have one of the best tournaments on the West Coast during the first week in January each year (this year it's January 8th & 9th) -- the Doc Buchanan Invitational (Clovis, CA). The tournament often coincides with The Clash and offers first-rate California competition. It’s in the heart of the best wrestling area in California, maybe in the Western United States. Schools in our area include Clovis (#17 AWN), Clovis West, Buchanan (previously #39 AWN), Clovis East, Clovis North, Selma (#34 AWN), Lemoore, and Bakersfield (probably Top 40 by year end, current #1 ranked team in the state). State Championship California teams in this decade:
2000-Calvary Chapel
2001-Calvary Chapel
2002-Bakersfield
2003-Clovis
2004-Bakersfield
2005-Poway
2006-Buchanan
2007-Vacaville
2008-Clovis
2009-Poway
In order to sample the nation's best and allow those around the country to get a glimpse of California wrestling, the last four years we have traveled to 4 different out-of-state tournaments, each in a different part of the country -- finished 17th at Rocky Mountain Rumble (Provo, UT), 1st at Berman Classic (Palatine, IL), 4th at Powerade Christmas Classic (Canonsburg, PA), and this year 11th at The Ironman (Cuyahoga Falls, OH). Obviously, The Ironman is a cut above all other competition but after extensive travel and some firsthand experience/knowledge, I can firmly place the Doc Buchanan Invitational as not only one of the best tournaments on the West Coast, but one of the Top 10-15 tournaments in the country. It has been previously ranked by Wrestling USA Magazine as one of the Top 10 tournaments in the nation. It competes very well with the following tournaments and is just a notch below the Powerade (one of the Top 5 tournaments in the country annually) in terms of competition:
-Bethlehem Holiday Classic (Bethlehem, PA)
-Brecksville Holiday Tournament (Brecksville, OH)
-Medina Invitational (Medina, OH)
-Manheim Invitational (Manheim, PA)
-King of the Mountain (Central Mountain, PA)
-Dvorak Memorial (Rockford, IL)
-Reno TOC (Reno, NV)
-Five Counties Invitational (Fountain Valley, CA)
What is California wrestling all about?
There is only ONE division for the state championship in California with 800+ schools competing. It takes 3-4 qualifying tournaments to reach the state tournament where the best of the best from the entire state, Oregon to Mexico, Nevada to Pacific Ocean, compete in a 40-man bracket. One champion. 8 medalists. It's a very difficult road. Only 19 wrestlers have ever PLACED in the California State Tournament 4 times (4 of those never won a championship). In California, there have been:
1 - 4x State Champion
6 - 4x State Finalists
14 - 3x State Champions
